The problem with shop floor indicators isn’t having too few, it’s having three for the same thing, with three names, and a history that changes every time the target is touched. Here is the minimal sheet for an indicator that holds up.
An indicator sheet
| Field | Rule | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Unique in the plant; one thing is one object | Line 2 scrap |
| Definition | One sentence, mandatory, written by whoever creates it | Scrapped parts ÷ parts produced, per shift |
| Type | Numeric or yes/no | Numeric, % |
| Frequency | Shift, day, week | Per shift |
| Target | By thresholds: on target / watch / off target | < 2% / 2–3% / > 3% |
| Entry | Who, where, at what time | Team leader, shop floor screen, end of shift |
| Source | Manual, walk, or automatic | Manual (automatic from TEEPTRAK later) |
The rule that protects history
A measurement is judged against the target in force the day it was entered. When the target goes from 3% to 2% on November 1, October stays judged at 3%. Otherwise a green month turns red retroactively and nobody trusts the board anymore. Every target change is dated and signed.
The grey
An expected measurement that isn’t entered stays a grey cell. Not an empty cell, not a zero: grey, visible to all. It’s the team’s discipline indicator, without anyone being graded.
From measurement to gap
When the cell turns orange, the tool offers to open a gap with the measurement, the value and the time. Offers: never imposed. The team decides at the meeting.
Frequently asked questions
How many indicators per team?
Five to seven. Each one needs someone who looks at it in the morning.
Who is allowed to create an indicator?
The facilitator requests, the administrator approves, to avoid duplicates. A refusal always has a written reason.
What about TEEPTRAK indicators?
OEE, stops and machine scrap will arrive on the board automatically, with no re-entry. It’s on the roadmap, marked “soon” on the Features page.
